Keeping Your Idaho Contractor Registration Active
Idaho contractors working on jobs of $2,000 or more must register with the Idaho Contractors Board, part of the Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses (DOPL). Registration requires a general liability policy of at least $300,000 single limit, including products and completed operations, plus workers’ comp for any employees. Idaho doesn’t require a state contractor bond for registration, but most general contractors and commercial jobs still ask for $1M per occurrence / $2M aggregate.
The Hardhat Insurance Team is the marketing division of Bearstar Insurance Services. We work with standard and specialty carriers that write Idaho contractors and issue certificates of insurance that meet registration, city permit and general contractor requirements in Boise, Meridian, Nampa, Idaho Falls, Pocatello and Coeur d’Alene.
Commercial General Liability
Idaho General Liability
Idaho requires at least $300,000 in general liability, including products and completed operations, to register as a contractor. Most general contractors and commercial jobs ask for $1M per occurrence / $2M aggregate, so we quote both. Completed operations matters because Idaho allows construction defect claims for up to 6 years after a project is finished.
Limits that meet the $300,000 registration minimum and your contracts.
Additional insured, waiver of subrogation and primary/non-contributory wording when your GC requires it.
Surety Bonds
Idaho Permit & Public Works Bonds
Idaho doesn’t require a state bond to register as a contractor, but public works projects, many cities and some specialty trades do. We can often issue bonds the same day, with a quick quote and no long application.
Bad credit programs available.
Permit, public works and performance bonds.
Idaho requires workers’ compensation once you have employees, full- or part-time. Sole proprietors and working partners or LLC members can be exempt. We compare the Idaho State Insurance Fund with private carriers to find a rate that fits your payroll and class codes.
Pay-as-you-go options available (helps cash flow).
Waivers of subrogation for commercial contracts.

Idaho Workers’ Comp: State Insurance Fund vs. Private Carriers
Idaho employers can buy workers’ comp from the Idaho State Insurance Fund, from one of the private insurers authorized in the state, or, for large employers, self-insure. Employers no one will write can go to the assigned risk pool.
The State Insurance Fund isn’t automatically the cheapest or the most expensive choice. Your price depends on your class codes, payroll, experience mod and claims history, and some private carriers price certain trades more aggressively or package workers’ comp with your general liability and auto.
The State Insurance Fund often fits small Idaho employers who want a stable, local insurer.
A private carrier may fit contractors who want to bundle coverage, work in more than one state, or get a better rate for their class code.
As your broker, we quote the State Insurance Fund and private carriers side by side, so you can compare price, payment options and service before you choose. Call (949) 868-7350.
