Insurance Requirements by State

In every state we serve, we place general liability, workers’ comp, commercial auto, contractor bonds, builders risk, equipment, umbrella and more. Here are the licensing and insurance rules that matter most in each state.

California

Contractors are licensed by the CSLB and need a $25,000 contractor license bond. LLC licensees also need a $100,000 LLC employee/worker bond and at least $1 million in liability coverage. Workers’ comp is required once you have employees, and under SB 216 every licensee will need it by January 1, 2028. See California contractor insurance.

Oregon

Contractors are licensed by the Construction Contractors Board (CCB), with bond and liability minimums set by endorsement. Workers’ comp comes from SAIF or a private carrier. See Oregon contractor insurance, plus roofing, excavation, tree service and demolition.

Washington

Contractors register with the Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) and keep a bond and liability insurance on file. Workers’ comp comes only from L&I, so most contractors add stop gap coverage. See Washington contractor insurance, plus roofing, excavation, tree service and demolition.

Nevada

Contractors are licensed by the Nevada State Contractors Board (NSCB), which sets each license bond between $1,000 and $500,000 and requires proof of workers’ comp or an exemption. See Nevada contractor insurance, plus roofing and excavation.

Idaho

Contractors working on jobs of $2,000 or more register with the Idaho Contractors Board and must carry general liability of at least $300,000, including completed operations, plus workers’ comp for employees. See Idaho contractor insurance.

Texas

Texas has no statewide general contractor license, though many cities require registration or permits. Workers’ comp is optional for most private employers, but public projects require it and most general contractors ask for it from their subs. See Texas contractor insurance, plus roofing and excavation.

Arizona

Contractors are licensed by the Registrar of Contractors (ROC) and post a license bond. Workers’ comp is required from the first employee, full- or part-time.

Colorado

Colorado has no statewide general contractor license, so licensing happens at the city or county level, as in Denver and Colorado Springs. Workers’ comp is required with one or more employees.
